Jason Hatch Obituary

Jason Lee Kurtis Hatch, 56, of Richmond, Virginia was found deceased in his Highland Park home on Thursday May 7th, 2026. He was born October 16th, 1969, and is preceded in death by his father Roy Lemuel Hatch, his mother Ellen Eva (Hamill) Hatch, and his younger sister Jessica Lee Sterling Hatch. Jason is survived by his daughter Muireann DeLay, and spouse Felix, granddaughter Alice Elizabeth Hatch, former spouse Angela, dear friends Marty and Jocelyn, three maternal cousins, and others who all tremendously grieve the loss of this most interesting person.

Jason graduated high school in 1987, proudly served as a Submarine Sonar Technician in the U.S. Navy, and later settled into a productive life as a trades craftsman. Jason was an accomplished welder, an aspirational Bladesmith, a master chess player (at 2600+), and took his archery practice to a spiritual level! He loved to have long chats over hot tea, he loved to explain things and teach people, and he really loved to make things - he was very creatively expressive. Jason was contemplative, soft-spoken, and well-versed in mythology, ancient history, and philosophy - a real Renaissance Man! He also had a deep fondness for animals, especially dogs.

A celebration of life will be held at William Byrd Park, 600 S. Arthur Ashe Blvd in Richmond, Friday June 19th, 2026 at 6pm near the fountain. Friends are encouraged to don their favorite boots and bandanas in Jason's honor, and share their fondest memories.

RIP Jason Lee Kurtis Hatch (1969-2026)

It saddens me deeply to share that my cousin Jason recently took his own life. His next of kin are planning his cremation and a memorial service for Friday June 19th, at a Richmond area park tbd. I will share additional info as it becomes available.

Jason was a delightful, brilliant, complicated man, this world is far less interesting without him in it. I take some comfort in believing that Jason & Jessie are together again, free from the ill effects of traumatic lives in an unjust world.

Shakespearean Calvin & Hobbes

I invited Jason to a fancy knife show several months away, and he said "You're quite the little long range planner, you are. I am with Shakespeare in that "Methinks the most capricious zephyr doth have more design than I."

The quote is actually a highly celebrated line from the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip by Bill Watterson. In the dialogue, Calvin's mom catches him running out the door and asks:

"Whither goest thou, young rogue? Can there remain some villainy thou hast not yet committed?"

Calvin replies:

"Thou dost wrong me! 'faith, I know not where I wander; methinks the most capricious zephyr hath more design than I."

Furnace

“That furnace is central to my merchandising plan and I have to come see you and your sexy new house 🏠 so we can have tea and talk about how to get my ideas on line in a professional manner.”

In Final Development . . . the Tyrdrop

Introducing Centerline's first custom knife - the Tyrdrop is the cornerstone of Centerline Custom Creations - Hatch’s signature knife - its concept and design were the start of his journey from career welder to artisan bladesmith. A unique grind brings the center of gravity far forward, making it exquisitely comfortable to hold, an excellent throwing and working knife. Tyrdrop is cast in Beryllium Copper (BeCu) then hardened, ground, and honed.

Tyrdrop is named after the Norse mythology figure Tyr, who was known as the God of War, or the God of Justice, whose arm was bravely lost in the binding of giant wolf Fenrir. "Tyr is a god of war, justice, and treaties in Norse mythology, belonging to the Aesir tribe. His name is related to Zeus or Jupiter. He is best known for sacrificing his hand to the wolf Fenrir, one of Loki's monstrous children, while the gods bound him with a trick. He is foretold to be killed by another beast, Garmr, during Ragnarök. He was more prominent in Germanic religion before the Viking Age, when Odin and Thor overshadowed him. He was mainly worshipped in Denmark."
